Tim awaits Sandra,

00:00:05

his manager,

00:00:06

for the annual review.

00:00:08

As soon as she sits down,

00:00:09

Sandra,

00:00:09

without preamble,

00:00:10

dives into the evaluation.

00:00:13

Tim,

00:00:13

honestly,

00:00:14

I know you can do better.

00:00:15

Her tone is slightly condescending.

00:00:18

He knows this phrase well.

00:00:20

It reminds him of parent teacher meetings with Mrs.

00:00:23

Germaine,

00:00:23

his elementary school teacher.

00:00:26

He sees himself again sitting next to his parents

00:00:29

listening to the list of his shortcomings.

00:00:32

I think you would be much more efficient if

00:00:34

you spent less time talking with your colleagues,

00:00:36

Sandra continues.

00:00:38

Again,

00:00:39

a line that makes him feel like he's back on his little school bench.

00:00:43

The last file you submitted to me,

00:00:45

you didn't proofread it,

00:00:46

did you?

00:00:47

You lack thoroughness,

00:00:48

Tim,

00:00:49

she adds,

00:00:50

arms crossed.

00:00:52

Tim feels diminished.

00:00:53

Did Sandra really say those last sentences?

00:00:57

He loses his composure

00:00:59

in every annual review.

00:01:01

He feels projected back to the school benches,

00:01:04

evaluated by a teacher who will hand out a paper

00:01:07

with a big can do better written in red.

00:01:10

Tim gathers himself and takes a deep breath.

00:01:14

Sandra,

00:01:15

I suggest we review the objectives of the year,

00:01:18

he says calmly.

00:01:19

It will be a good starting point to

00:01:21

discuss together my strengths and areas for development.

00:01:25

Sandra seems caught off guard.

00:01:27

Uh,

00:01:27

yes,

00:01:27

of course.

00:01:29

The tone changes and so does the dynamic.

00:01:32

Tim has left the school benches.

00:01:34

The two adults now discuss as equals,

00:01:37

addressing topics with professionalism and mutual respect.
