an experienced manager,

00:00:03

wanted to improve the efficiency of his team meetings.

00:00:07

He'd already attended training on meeting facilitation.

00:00:10

He had learned to listen,

00:00:12

to stimulate everyone's expression,

00:00:14

to follow objectives,

00:00:15

to distribute roles in meetings,

00:00:17

and to advance decision making.

00:00:20

He had even completed level 2 of meeting facilitation and knew

00:00:24

how to adjust to so-called difficult participants dealing with counter leaders,

00:00:29

followers,

00:00:30

the distracted,

00:00:31

and the talkative.

00:00:33

However,

00:00:34

Calvin felt that something was missing.

00:00:36

He then decided to invite his team to an original

00:00:39

training on meeting conduct focused on the appreciative inquiry method.

00:00:44

Calvin was intrigued by this approach that encouraged identifying and

00:00:48

capitalizing on individual talents and

00:00:51

successes to facilitate collective improvement.

00:00:54

He liked the idea that for once the training wasn't reserved only for

00:00:58

managers who were considered solely responsible

00:01:00

for facilitating and succeeding in meetings.

00:01:04

The day of the training arrived and excitement was palpable.

00:01:08

The workshop began with a session where each

00:01:10

participant shared their past successes in meetings.

00:01:13

They then explored the individual and collective talents

00:01:16

that had contributed to these meeting successes.

00:01:19

Of course

00:01:20

there were the facilitation skills of one or more facilitators,

00:01:23

but that's not all.

00:01:25

They also noted the importance of talents in communication,

00:01:28

organization,

00:01:29

creativity,

00:01:31

antagonism,

00:01:32

imagination.

00:01:33

Distraction or attention to detail

00:01:37

through various interactive exercises,

00:01:39

team members discovered unsuspected talents in their colleagues and themselves.

00:01:45

Some realized that what they'd previously considered as

00:01:47

faults were actually valuable assets in meetings.

00:01:52

For example,

00:01:53

Lea,

00:01:53

often criticized for her antagonism,

00:01:56

discovered that her talent lay in highlighting points of friction which,

00:02:00

once resolved,

00:02:01

led to more robust solutions.

00:02:04

Martin,

00:02:04

often labeled as talkative,

00:02:06

turned out to be an excellent animator capable

00:02:09

of maintaining the energy of the meeting.

00:02:12

Sophie perceived as reserved,

00:02:14

brought an essential sense of detail,

00:02:16

ensuring that nothing was overlooked.

00:02:19

The training was a real eye opener for Calvin and his team.

00:02:23

They learned that the key to a successful meeting lay less

00:02:26

in managing flaws than in exploiting each individual's unique talents.

00:02:31

From the next meeting onwards,

00:02:33

the team applied this new approach of valuing individual talents.

00:02:37

The meetings became more lively,

00:02:39

more constructive and significantly more effective.
