Philip,

00:00:03

the department head,

00:00:04

received the annual goals from the management.

00:00:07

This year,

00:00:07

the directives include a 10% increase in revenue,

00:00:11

raising customer satisfaction from 90% to 95%,

00:00:15

and a 5% reduction in operational costs.

00:00:19

Traditionally,

00:00:20

these objectives set by upper management trickle

00:00:23

down the hierarchy without soliciting opinions,

00:00:26

a practice Philip is accustomed to.

00:00:28

In the past,

00:00:29

Philip would develop a strategy and assign individual goals

00:00:32

to his 10 collaborators to meet these service targets.

00:00:36

However,

00:00:37

this year,

00:00:37

a training in participatory management and collective decision

00:00:41

making inspired him to try a new method.

00:00:44

Determined to involve his team in the process,

00:00:47

Philip decides to stop calling these annual objectives the service goals

00:00:52

and to carry them alone as a manager.

00:00:54

He decides to now call them the team objectives.

00:00:58

Armed with this new perspective,

00:01:00

he organizes a meeting with his collaborators

00:01:02

to jointly define the annual team objectives.

00:01:06

On the day of the meeting,

00:01:08

Philip is pleasantly surprised to find that his

00:01:10

team spontaneously proposes two of the management's set objectives

00:01:14

increasing revenue by 10% and improving customer satisfaction from 90 to 95%.

00:01:21

Furthermore,

00:01:22

they show creativity by suggesting two

00:01:25

additional goals improving internal communication,

00:01:29

particularly with the operations department,

00:01:31

and launching a new product on the market.

00:01:34

When Philip mentions the additional objective of a

00:01:36

5% reduction in operational costs set by management,

00:01:40

the team,

00:01:41

driven by proactive momentum,

00:01:43

accepts it with unexpected receptivity.

00:01:46

Encouraged by this positive engagement,

00:01:49

Philip plans the next meeting with the team to

00:01:51

discuss ways to achieve these five team objectives.

00:01:55

He's excited at the idea that his collaborators will themselves propose,

00:01:59

each in their own way,

00:02:01

how they can contribute to and achieve these collective goals,

00:02:05

marking a shift towards more collaborative and participative management.
