00:00:03

being the youngest on the team,

00:00:05

when he joined his job,

00:00:06

he had one priority to make himself indispensable,

00:00:09

lacking confidence and in his first job,

00:00:12

he didn't know how to prioritize.

00:00:14

At home it was his mother who distributed the tasks within the household,

00:00:19

and as the youngest he was of great service to his elders

00:00:22

who entrusted him with many tasks they didn't like to do themselves.

00:00:26

Entering the world of work,

00:00:28

he continued this strategy that had always worked well for him.

00:00:31

Vincent is helpful and efficient,

00:00:33

they said.

00:00:34

But after 3 months of running to satisfy everyone else's priorities,

00:00:39

Vincent was tired,

00:00:40

and his manager seemed dissatisfied.

00:00:43

Vincent,

00:00:44

you didn't meet the quarterly objectives set for you.

00:00:47

I'm sorry.

00:00:48

I ran out of time.

00:00:49

I don't understand.

00:00:50

You always seemed available.

00:00:52

That's true.

00:00:53

I haven't been idle for 3 months.

00:00:56

True,

00:00:56

you were always available and at the same time you were running everywhere.

00:01:00

What were you doing?

00:01:02

I was handling requests that were made by you and colleagues one after another,

00:01:05

and it never stopped.

00:01:07

So you relegated the objectives I entrusted to you to the background.

00:01:12

Actually,

00:01:12

when you or a colleague asked me for something,

00:01:14

I thought it had become the priority.

00:01:17

No,

00:01:18

your priority is and remains the objectives on your mission sheet.

00:01:22

They are,

00:01:22

of course,

00:01:23

always negotiable,

00:01:24

but they must remain your priorities.

00:01:26

You won't be able to perform in your

00:01:28

job if you scatter yourself executing other tasks.

00:01:32

Every time someone wants to give you a task,

00:01:34

first validate if it corresponds to your priority missions.

00:01:38

If not,

00:01:39

assert yourself and talk about it.

00:01:42

Is that OK?

00:01:43

Let's check in next week.

00:01:45

This was a pivotal discussion in Vincent's professional and even personal life.

00:01:50

He became an expert in prioritization and focused more on his main goals,

00:01:55

allowing less interference from others' priorities.
