00:00:04

who places great importance on respect,

00:00:07

specifically respect for age and respect for hierarchy.

00:00:11

Tension with some colleagues led his manager Amelia to suggest coaching.

00:00:16

Initially reluctant,

00:00:18

seeing coaching as proof of incompetence he didn't recognize,

00:00:21

he eventually accepted,

00:00:23

understanding it as a real investment offered by his company.

00:00:27

His coach helped him articulate the imbalanced relationships he established

00:00:31

by hiding behind these two values of respect for age

00:00:35

and respect for hierarchy.

00:00:38

He discovered that his fatigue was partly due to this imbalanced respect.

00:00:42

He bowed and bent before any one older and every hierarchical superior.

00:00:47

He always agreed with them,

00:00:49

suppressed his opinions when he thought differently,

00:00:51

put them on a pedestal,

00:00:53

and considered them wiser and more intelligent than him in every respect.

00:00:58

He sometimes let them belittle and educate

00:01:00

him like a child without saying anything.

00:01:03

His coach then helped him establish an equal relationship with these people.

00:01:08

She assisted him in differentiating respect from submission.

00:01:12

He eventually realized that respect must always be reciprocal

00:01:16

and that no one was superior to him.

00:01:19

Having passed this first stage of coaching,

00:01:21

Tongy understood on his own where the tensions

00:01:23

were with some of his colleagues came from.

00:01:26

He particularly displayed an attitude of superiority

00:01:29

towards younger and less competent colleagues.

00:01:32

He felt they should respect him and bow as he had done to his superiors.

00:01:37

He was neither their boss nor their father,

00:01:39

but he often spoke to them as such,

00:01:41

giving advice and reprimanding here and there when it wasn't his place.

00:01:46

He admitted that he looked down on them,

00:01:48

taking offense at any lack of respect for his age and competency superiority.

00:01:54

Unfortunately,

00:01:55

his respect was not reciprocal.

00:01:57

In a final coaching session,

00:01:59

he decided to broaden his value of respect and reserve it

00:02:02

not only for elders' superiors but for all his colleagues.

00:02:07

Tongy will always remember his coach's last words.

00:02:10

Remember,

00:02:10

Tongy,

00:02:11

if you do not consider the other as an equal,

00:02:14

you create a toxic relationship.
