an expert in resilience.

00:00:05

If I've experienced something difficult that I can't control,

00:00:09

then I don't need to worry about it,

00:00:11

and I can move on.

00:00:12

I'll say,

00:00:13

OK,

00:00:14

it happened.

00:00:15

It wasn't a good thing,

00:00:16

and it wasn't fun,

00:00:17

but I can't control that,

00:00:19

and so I'm going to continue my life.

00:00:22

Much of the stress and anxiety we feel

00:00:24

and not because of the things that have happened

00:00:27

but because of what we tell ourselves about them.

00:00:30

If someone criticize and insults me and I take it personally,

00:00:34

that's when stress and anxiety appear.

00:00:37

But I could just as well say,

00:00:39

OK,

00:00:40

that person didn't like what I did.

00:00:42

I'm not going to curl up because of that,

00:00:44

and I'm going to continue my life.

00:00:46

We can let go of the past.

00:00:49

We can learn to say,

00:00:50

for example,

00:00:51

OK,

00:00:52

I had a terrible childhood.

00:00:53

My parents were not supportive and were abusive,

00:00:56

and we had no money,

00:00:58

and so on.

00:00:59

That's true,

00:01:00

but I know I can go beyond that.

00:01:02

I am better than that.

00:01:04

I don't have to be part of that.

00:01:06

I don't have to let that determine who I am now and who I will be in the future.

00:01:12

Believing in a positive future and changing what we can change,

00:01:16

I am constantly amazed by people who are very concerned

00:01:20

about things happening at their workplace or in their relationships.

00:01:24

When I ask them,

00:01:25

Well,

00:01:26

what control do you have over that?

00:01:28

And they say,

00:01:29

I have absolutely no control over that.

00:01:32

Then my next question is,

00:01:34

so how much energy,

00:01:35

how much attention do you want to put on something you have no control over?

00:01:40

Let's put our energy into creating a positive future,

00:01:43

not trying to change something we have no chance of succeeding at.
