two collaborators,

00:00:04

Alice and Bob,

00:00:06

were responsible for an ambitious project.

00:00:09

Although they worked thousands of miles apart,

00:00:12

technology was supposed to be their ally.

00:00:14

One Monday,

00:00:15

Alice sent an email to Bob.

00:00:17

I was thinking of using Trello to track our progress.

00:00:20

Is that OK with you?

00:00:22

Bob,

00:00:22

an avid Asana user,

00:00:24

replied,

00:00:25

Not a fan of Trello.

00:00:26

Let's use Asana,

00:00:27

much more professional.

00:00:29

Alice,

00:00:30

surprised by the direct response,

00:00:31

wrote,

00:00:32

I have already set everything up on Trello.

00:00:35

She clicked send,

00:00:36

letting a hint of irritation show.

00:00:39

She was convinced that Trello was the best tool and refused to budge.

00:00:43

The next day,

00:00:44

during a video conference,

00:00:45

Bob said,

00:00:46

Alice,

00:00:46

you could also improve your connection.

00:00:48

It's the 3rd time it's cut off.

00:00:50

Bob was convinced that the poor connection

00:00:52

was due to Alice's lack of professionalism.

00:00:55

Alice,

00:00:56

already annoyed by the previous day's disagreement,

00:00:58

replied sharply,

00:01:00

Maybe if you had accepted Trello,

00:01:02

we wouldn't have to do so many video calls.

00:01:05

In the following days,

00:01:06

each email,

00:01:07

each message escalated the conflict a notch.

00:01:10

Instead of discussing the project,

00:01:12

they got bogged down in sarcastic comments.

00:01:15

Alice sent a chart saying,

00:01:17

At least some of us are making progress,

00:01:19

while Bob retorted,

00:01:21

if only they were moving in the right direction.

00:01:24

Their dispute was no longer really about Trello or

00:01:26

Asana nor about the quality of the internet connection,

00:01:30

which were the true sources of disagreement and

00:01:33

could have been easily discussed and resolved.

00:01:36

It was now about judgments,

00:01:37

emotions,

00:01:38

poor communication,

00:01:40

and the difficulty of working remotely without building a trusting relationship.

00:01:45

A month later,

00:01:45

their manager noticed the project's delay.

00:01:48

When he tried to organize a meeting,

00:01:50

neither Alice nor Bob wanted to participate if the other was present.

00:01:54

The initial insignificant conflict had turned

00:01:57

into a professional feud highlighting the importance

00:02:00

of good and quick management of disagreements in the world of remote work.
