Teams - Create private and shared channels Tutorial

Create private and shared channels. The video explains three Teams channel types: standard accessible to all team members, private with access limited to selected members, and shared that lets you collaborate with specific individuals or teams without exposing the whole team. It demonstrates creating a private channel, naming and describing it, selecting private access, assigning members and roles, and noting that private channels cannot become standard channels. It then covers creating a shared channel, inviting specific members, and channel-wide access restrictions.

00:00:04
a team can contain 3 types of channels.
00:00:07
A standard channel is available to all team members.
00:00:10
A private channel restricts access to specific members of that same team.
00:00:15
A shared channel allows you to collaborate with targeted individuals
00:00:19
or teams without giving them access to the entire team.
00:00:23
Let's start with the private channel.
00:00:26
It is useful for discussing a confidential subject
00:00:29
or a subject reserved for a small group.
00:00:32
From the relevant team open the team menu and choose add channel
00:00:37
in the creation window you enter the name,
00:00:40
then a description if necessary.
00:00:43
In the channel type select private.
00:00:46
This means that only specific team members will be able to access the channel
00:00:51
for the layout you can keep thread
00:00:53
so that replies remain grouped by conversation.
00:00:57
After creation,
00:00:59
teams asked to add the channel members
00:01:01
for a private channel,
00:01:03
each person added must already be part of the team.
00:01:07
We search for the employee,
00:01:08
we select him,
00:01:10
then we choose his role,
00:01:12
member or owner.
00:01:13
When the addition is complete,
00:01:15
the channel will appear in the team with a padlock icon.
00:01:19
This icon indicates that access is restricted.
00:01:22
Only owners and members of the private channel can see the channel,
00:01:26
participate in exchanges
00:01:28
and access files shared in that space.
00:01:31
This choice is made from the very beginning.
00:01:34
A private channel cannot be transformed into a standard channel afterwards.
00:01:39
As a guideline,
00:01:40
Microsoft also limits a team to 30 private channels,
00:01:45
and each private channel can contain up to 250 members.
00:01:50
Now let's create a shared channel.
00:01:53
It is used to work with a specific person or team
00:01:57
inside or outside the host team
00:01:59
without opening up the rest of the team.
00:02:02
We open the team menu again,
00:02:04
then we add a channel,
00:02:06
fill in the name,
00:02:07
add a description if necessary,
00:02:09
and then choose the shared type.
00:02:12
After validation,
00:02:14
Teams offers to share the channel with all team members.
00:02:17
It is also possible to add specific members
00:02:21
by searching for their name,
00:02:22
then defining their role before confirming the addition.
00:02:26
A shared channel provides access only to that channel.
00:02:30
Added people don't automatically see other channels,
00:02:35
conversations,
00:02:35
or team files.
00:02:37
If the sharing is for people outside the organization,
00:02:40
the option must be allowed by the admin settings.
00:02:44
The shared channel will then appear with its specific icon
00:02:49
as with the private channel,
00:02:50
the type of channel must be chosen at the right time.
00:02:54
A shared channel cannot be made a standard or private channel.
00:02:59
In short,
00:02:59
the standard channel is intended for the whole team.
00:03:03
The private channel is used to limit access to certain team members.
00:03:08
The shared channel is used to collaborate with targeted individuals
00:03:12
or teams while keeping access to the channel limited.
